Playing clips from Mortimer Adler’s dvd version of How To Read A Book, as well as a short excerpt from Rev. Edmund Opitz’ talk, The Liberating Arts, I outline for the audience a few essential skills that are required in order to obtain the most from a Trivium-based education. As the Trivium deals with the substance and structure of thought and language, it can be said to be a universal education, relevant to all human beings regardless of time and place.

This is a way to increase your intelligence.

Part 1 covers the introductory information on the Trivium Subjects and Method, while Part 2 covers the Trivium Skills.

    1. As a beginner, I would like to say I found this extremely helpful. I am an undergraduate mature 2nd year student from Scotland studying for my psychology degree and feel like I can start applying some of these skills immediately to the vast amount of reading necessary to complete the course. Thank you! Also I will be purchasing some of the books and in particular the DVD you have recommended. Well done and once again thank you for your effort and time in making this podcast. Wendy ??

    1. Do you mean to say you didn’t like it? Brutally honest feedback is heavily encouraged here! Personally I thought the only saving grace of this episode was the Adler clips, I hope to re-edit and shorten my speaking parts soon. . .

    First of all, thank you very much for your work, it help me a lot in my pursuit of self trivium learning.

    Honestly regarding your last comment, I don t realy agree, I tought that your interventions were necessary to sum up what Mortimer Adler say as it is a bit confusing here and there, you know they make jokes and try to outsmart eachother witch in the end make it harder to grasp as they annonce the key setences pretty quicky and move on but again it might be that my concentration isn t yet at it best.

    The fact that you can link their teaching with the concret application that we must have in our future studies is essential. It would had been much more confusing without you.

    If you happen to edit it in the future, please leave at least this version as a option.

    I am also please that you recommanded some key books because I ordered Sister Miriam Joseph and I must say that I had some troubles with it. I will keep on going with the childs book for the present time I guess.

    When I downloaded this I was really hoping for a great audio tutorial on how to read a book. I really struggled to finish this in a large part due to your speaking style.

    You go on and on about how important it is, then you go on and on about how important it is, all the while not really adding anything to the discussion. Economy of words would give more impact to your presentation. Also, do you really need to insert a stilted laugh for no reason, and so often? It comes off as some sort of a self-congratulatory speech device as opposed to something actually derived from humour and its very off-putting.

    1. Thanks for the feedback, and keep in mind this was a first attempt at this. The second version will be much different and I think better.

      I didn’t realize that I simply stated how important the Trivium is without giving any example, can you elaborate a bit more?

      I’m not sure what you mean by the stilted laugh but it probably has more to do with being nervous and wondering if I was actually going to be able to pull this off!

      Since then I’ve been working on the Trivium Binder Project, and hopefully by this summer I’ll have a second version out of the audio presentation but we’ll see.

  5. Succinct, interesting, and helpful beyond the tip of the iceberg. Incidentally,not to sweep under other prior comments made, however your oratory delivery had nearly no bearing on my ability to get down on this. Consider me sold.

  6. Really enjoyed the talk. It adds some perspective to your Essay “Learning Skills and the Trivium” from the Trivium Binder.

    I was hoping to solve the ten point question, since I grew up near Chicago and have been to the Adler Planetarium many times. I discovered it was not named for Mortimer Adler, but for Max Adler, a Chicago businessman who became fascinated by the projection machine in Europe and decided to build the first Planetarium in the Western hemisphere.

    1. Tom, thanks so much for the info, I actually assumed it was in honor of Mortimer Adler! Clearly I didn’t do my fact checking on this episode, but hey, it was over two years ago and I was excited to just complete this aspect of my project. My next audio presentation will be vetted, haha. Even my recent essay is, to me, obsolete and more a product of inner pressure than it is one of refinement.

  7. This lecture gives a great overview of the Trivium basics. With excellent examples of Addler, Kane etc. to the self educational aspects of learning. As a neophyte of the Trivium, I feel that much time has been wasted in the halls of academia. Today most colleges and universities have been turned into waste lands for the intellectually challenge by the elitists. For those who have the courage to face their educational short coming, your website is that piece of wood floating in the middle of the ocean, far from land. A shard of hope to grasp for, that mankind can reach the day of a new dawn.

    This just to ask you to confirm to me the name of that book, ‘how to talk, by clap and cane,’ as I can’t find it on google or amazon.
